SUMMARY:TechTuesday - August 2026
DESCRIPTION:Verifying the Food System: High-Leverage AI for Low-Trust Markets\nGlobal markets no longer run on trust; they run on verifiable proof. For agricultural exporters\, proving their sustainability and origin credentials has become a heavy technical bottleneck. The required data is incredibly messy\, siloed\, and scattered across completely different systems. \nAs Fractional CTO at Backstory\, Mark Dunlop is using an AI-first approach to approach this data crisis. In this talk\, Mark will share how they are building AI agents anchored by a permanent “semantic memory” – a system that deeply understands the long-term relationships\, rules\, and history of a farm’s ecosystem. Discover how capturing this deep domain knowledge allows a lean engineering team to safely delegate complex data mapping to AI\, freeing up their attention to focus on high-value decisions and turning raw farm data into a major competitive advantage. \nRegister now\nEvent Outline: \n5.00pm – Member registration opens\, networking\, drinks and nibbles\n5.30pm – Non-member registration opens\n6.00pm – Canterbury Tech updates\n6.10pm – Quick Pitch\n6.15pm – Guest speaker\n7.00pm – More networking\n7.30pm – Close of event \n  \nThings to note:   \n\nEach attendee will receive 2 drinks tickets for the event. Alcoholic beverages may not leave the function space.\nMembers must have a valid membership at the time of booking and on the day of the event. This will be validated at each point and we reserve the right to invoice the event at the full\, non-member rate in the event that membership has lapsed.\nPlease note that registering for this event will be taken as acceptance that your image\, name\, or voice may be included in a recording or photos of proceedings that will be published after the event. \nBy registering for a Canterbury Tech event\, you are agreeing to abide by our Code of Conduct. \n\n

SUMMARY:Mapping Quality: Career Journeys\, Credibility and AI
DESCRIPTION:Join Women in Tech Christchurch for an honest and practical panel conversation exploring career journeys in testing\, quality\, and technology. \nRegister here. \nThere is rarely a perfect roadmap into tech\, and for many people working in testing and quality\, the path often starts by “falling into it”. From there\, these roles can grow into something much broader: shaping products\, influencing teams\, protecting customer experience\, and holding the line when delivery pressure is high. \nThis event will bring together women working across quality\, testing\, and leadership to discuss the real routes they have taken into tech\, how they have built credibility in their roles\, and what it takes to grow from finding bugs to driving quality at a wider business level. \nWe will also look at what is changing fast. With AI reshaping how teams build\, test\, and release software\, the panel will discuss what this means for testing roles\, where the opportunities are\, and which skills will matter most in the next stage of tech careers. \n### Speakers \nLiz Eden\nGeneral Manager\, Southern Consulting Management \nNamatha Scavish\nSenior Test Analyst \nAna Fe Peralta\nSenior Test Analyst \nAngela McKeen\nTest Manager \n### Event Details \nDate: Wednesday\, 5 August 2026\nTime: 5:30pm – 7:30pm\nLocation: EPIC Innovation Centre\n100 Manchester Street\, Christchurch Central City\, Christchurch 8011 \nA huge thank you to Planit for supporting this event. \nCome along for a practical discussion\, honest career insights\, and the chance to connect with others in the Christchurch tech community. \nDrinks and nibbles provided.

SUMMARY:Tech Marketers Meetup
DESCRIPTION:What I learnt (and unlearnt) moving from SaaS into Large Enterprise\nChristchurch Meet Up \nIrina has worked as a B2B marketer who has spent her career moving between fast-paced SaaS startups and large enterprise organisations across North America\, New Zealand and Australia. She’s focused on the many aspects of growth marketing\, SEO\, content\, brand\, and digital strategy\, with a strong focus on scaling marketing in complex environments. \nIn 2023 she took on a new challenge leading product marketing and adoption initiatives for UniMed – one of New Zealand’s largest health insurers. \nAt this Christchurch Tech Marketers NZ event\, she’ll share what surprised her most when transitioning from SaaS into enterprise. What was useful to bring with her and what she says marketers should unlearn or adapt. \nThis will be a great event to understand different approaches to marketing – what fits one environment may not be right for another\, and to share what you are seeing working or not in your current role. \nThere will be light nibbles and drinks and plenty of opportunities to network with other tech marketers. \nPlease RSVP by Friday 7 August so we know numbers for catering. \nAbout Irina \nIrina Smolina has worked as a B2B marketer in multiple countries across Europe\, North America and Australia before landing in New Zealand in 2021. She is now the Digital Marketing Manager (Product & Growth Focus) for Unimed\, one of NZ’s largest health insurers\, with over 140\,000 members and 500+ businesses to engage with. \nhttps://epicinnovation.co.nz

SUMMARY:Establishing a baseline for disabled travel through inclusive design research
DESCRIPTION:Air travel is often stressful and poorly understood for disabled people. Airlines invest in accessibility\, but rarely with reliable baseline data grounded in disabled people’s own lived experience. \nThis talk shares findings from a mixed-method design research project with Air New Zealand\, led through a disability rights and participatory lens to establish a baseline understanding of disabled travel on the trans-Tasman route. Drawing on surveys\, interviews\, ethnographic research with 12 disabled travellers\, and a disability leadership workshop\, the study covered the end-to-end journey: booking\, check-in\, security\, boarding\, in-flight\, arrival\, and recovery. Rather than treating accessibility as isolated problems\, it examined how systems\, policies\, staff practices\, digital touchpoints\, and attitudes combine to either enable or restrict safe\, dignified travel. \nBy treating disabled people as experts in their own experience\, the research challenges deficit-based accessibility models and offers a replicable approach for designers and organisations working in complex service systems. \nBio: Chandra Harrison\, PhD\, is a design researcher and accessibility specialist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. As Managing Director of Access Advisors\, she leads disability-focused research that uses lived experience and participatory methods. Her applied research helps improve understanding and inclusion. She has published research in books and journals and has presented work at conferences around the world in many different areas from appliance design to human computer interaction. \nAgenda\n5:00pm • Doors open\, networking + refreshments\n5:30pm • Presentation starts\n6:30pm • More networking\n7:00pm • Event close \nA big thank you to MadeCurious for providing the event space for us to meet – if you’re interested in what they do\, check out their LinkedIn page. \nMadeCurious HQ information: \n\nWe have x2 mobility car parks available and wheelchair access into the building\nIf you have any accessibility needs\, please let us know so we can make sure to cater for them\nLimited car parking will be available onsite (MadeCurious. labelled signs) and ample street parking close by the office\nThere is a bike shed at the back of the parking lot where you can park your bicycle.\n\nWe have a limited capacity\, so please only RSVP if you can definitely make it.

SUMMARY:AI Adoption in Practice: How the early and late majority are actually using AI
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nSome people are planning to build a cathedral…. when all they need (and will use) is a house. \nIn this session the talk will be around 30 minutes followed by Q&A\nAfterwards we’ll have an open discussion along with drinks/food at a nearby bar. \n—————— \nCat Moody is a Principal Consultant at MartinJenkins\, a New Zealand-owned advisory firm that works primarily with the public sector and is driven by a purpose of helping make Aotearoa New Zealand a better place.\nIn this session\, Cat will share practical insights from Martin Jenkins’ own AI adoption journey\, alongside reflections on broader AI adoption trends emerging across public sector New Zealand organisations. The discussion will explore how a New Zealand-owned business has approached AI adoption\, what has proven useful in practice\, the challenges encountered along the way\, and what has been learned from surveying staff about their use of AI.\nThe session will also introduce some emerging thinking on AI maturity\, including the organisational capabilities and conditions that can help support successful adoption and how leading through this change is both similar and different to leading through other types of change.\nAttendees will gain a practical view of AI adoption in practice\, including lessons learned\, common challenges\, and considerations for organisations looking to move beyond experimentation towards more consistent and sustainable use of AI.
