Presenter: Alan Cox
For those who’ve been around a while, you might remember Alan as one of the early pioneers of user-centred design (UCD) in New Zealand. He stumbled into UCD literally by accident after a back injury left him unable to walk (he can now!) At the time, UCD and UX were practically unknown. Alan later founded user research and design agency LeftClick, establishing NZ’s first commercial user testing lab and working with numerous high-profile brands on projects ranging from small-screen devices to multi-million-dollar e-commerce sites. With his strong entrepreneurial background, Alan grew disillusioned with common UX narratives, becoming known for championing ‘Outcome-Driven Design.’ Since then, Alan has led multiple startups using ODD principles to create class-leading products. His latest venture, the mental health app EverYellow, highlights the challenge of balancing world-class efficacy with product success, even when great UX is in place.
